Carolina Courage News Release
San Jose, CA - Forget the Bermuda Triangle. The Brazilian Triangle proved far more deadly. San Jose's trio of Katia, Pretinha, and Sissi scored a goal each in a fifteen minute span of the second half to bury the visiting Carolina Courage, 3-1, at Spartan Stadium on Saturday. Venus James, who played for San Jose in the inaugural 2001 WUSA season, snatched a face-saving tally in injury time for Carolina. The loss, the Courage's third consecutive by a 3-1 score line, matches the franchise's worst start. In frighteningly familiar fashion, Carolina opened the 2001 season by going 0-4 and dropping its fourth match on the road against San Jose.
Kristin Luckenbill, last year's WUSA Goalkeeper of the Year, made her first start of the season, after recovering from a preseason thumb surgery. In addition, defender Carla Overbeck saw action for the first time since returning from maternity leave.
The Courage will continue its road trip next Saturday when it travels to Washington, D.C. to face the red hot Washington Freedom at 5:00 pm at RFK Stadium. The match will be carried live on Triangle TV (channel 24 in Raleigh).
The Courage will play its next home game against Julie Foudy and the San Diego Spirit on Saturday, May 24th at 4 pm at SAS Stadium in Cary. A limited number of premium seats are still available and can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at (919) 834-4000 or by stopping by Kroger's, Hecht's or the SAS Stadium box office.
