Greeneville Astros News Release
Danville, VA - The Greeneville Astros (4-4) surrendered an early lead against the Danville Braves (5-3) on Thursday night and ultimately were defeated, 4-2, at American Legion Post 325 Field at Dan Daniel Memorial Park. The Astros had led 2-0 before the Braves' come-from-behind win was sparked by a three-run sixth inning to take the lead.
Astros' starting pitcher Devonte German held Danville in check through the first five innings. The Braves were scoreless with just two hits, three walks, and five strikeouts at the time of his departure.
The Astros had taken the initial lead in the game in the second inning on a Yonathan Mejia RBI triple after a Trent Woodward ground-rule double. Then, in the top of the sixth, Sean McMullen connected on a solo shot for his first professional home run to give the Astros a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Braves came alive. Their first score came on an Astros fielding error with a runner on third. Then, Gerald Chin and Mike Dodig each had RBI singles to propel the Braves ahead, 3-2. Finally, in the eighth, they tacked on one more run with a Wigberto Nevarez RBI single following a Sean Godfrey triple.
Down to their final three outs, the Astros came out swinging in the ninth inning. Trent Woodward led off with a single and Yonathan Mejia matched to give Greeneville two runners on with no outs. However, Braves reliever Caleb Dirks struck out the next two batters and got the final out on a force out at third.
Dirks pitched the final two innings, gave up three hits, struck out three, and picked up a save. Matt Kimbrel (2-0) also pitched two innings in relief of starter Daniel Cordero, gave up one hit, one run, struck out three, and got the win.
With the current series tied at 1-1, the Astros will face the Braves in the rubber match on Friday night in Danville.
