June 26, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Yankees have struggled all season when it comes to opening games of the series. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre threw that stat out the window on Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory over the Gwinnett Braves in game one of a four game series at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York. Russell Branyan roped a two-RBI single with two outs in the bottom half of the eighth, busting the 1-1 tie and leading the Yankees to victory.
The Yankees jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning. With one out in the inning and Corban Joseph on third, Ronnier Mustelier chopped a ground ball, which took a high bounce over Gwinnett starting pitcher Todd Redmond's head, allowing Joseph to score. Although Joseph scored, Mustelier was thrown out at first for the second out of the inning. The Yankees failed to plate another run in the inning. The Braves tied things up in the top half of the sixth inning when Felix Pie roped a two out RBI single to left field allowing Jose Constanza to score, tying the game at 1-1.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre then took the lead in the bottom half of the eighth when Russell Branyan hit a two-RBI line drive single with the bases loaded. Ramiro Pena and Chris Dickerson both came around to score giving the Yankees the 3-1 advantage after eight innings of play.
D.J. Mitchell earned the no decision for the Yankees. The right-hander tossed seven innings allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out six and walking two. Jason Bulger was credited with the win improving to 2-0 on the season for the Yankees, as he pitched a scoreless eighth inning allowing one hit and striking out one. Ryota Igarashi picked up his second save of the year as he shut the door on the Braves in the ninth.
Todd Redmond was solid earning the no decision for the Braves. He allowed just one run on three hits, while walking three and striking out five. Jaye Chapman was credited with the loss, falling to 2-4 on the season for the Braves. He allowed two runs on one hit, while walking two and striking out one.
The Yankees and Braves take to the field Wednesday evening at 7:05 for game two of a four game series at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY. Veteran right-hander Ramon Ortiz (6-3, 2.98) gets the nod for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while lefty Yohan Flande (3-6, 3.87) heads to the hill for Gwinnett.
