GAME NOTES: The WHEAT KINGS kick off a mini 2-game weekend home stand Friday night against the visiting LETHBRIDGE HURRICANES at the Keystone Centre...BRANDON is currently riding a 2-game win streak after back to back victories - for the first time this season - last weekend on the road...After dropping a 5-4 Overtime Shootout decision to REGINA on Friday night, the WHEAT KINGS rebounded with wins in both SASKATOON and PRINCE ALBERT...Winners of three of their last four games, the WHEATS have collected at least a point in four straight games and enter the weekend sitting in second place in the Wes tern Hockey League's Eastern Division with a record of 6-4-0-1, which marks the first time this season that they've climbed two games over the .500 mark...With 13 points, BRANDON trails the first place SWIFT CURRENT BRONCOS by one point and the WHEATS have one game in hand...Following Saturday's game against KOOTENAY, BRANDON will hit the highway for its annual west coast road trip, beginning Wednesday night at Pacific Coliseum in VANCOUVER against the 10-0-1-0 GIANTS...The WHEAT KINGS are currently 3-1-0-1 at the Keystone Centre and they're playing .500 hockey on the road (3-3-0)...In games against Central Division teams, BRANDON is 3-2-0...and 3-2-0-1 against Eastern Division rivals...BRANDON currently has 25 players on its roster (2 goalkeepers, 8 defenceman and 15 forwards).
LAST GAME: 19-year old RYAN REAVES, for the second straight game, fired a pair of goals including the game winner as the WHEAT KINGS closed out a 3-game in three night weekend with an impressive 6-2 victory over the RAIDERS in PRINCE ALBERT...The line of REAVES, MARK DERLAGO and ANDREW CLARK combined for ten points Sunday as the WHEAT KINGS gained some revenge for losing 7-5 in PRINCE ALBERT on Oct. 4th...DERLAGO scored twice, CLARK added four assists while singles came off the sticks of DANIEL BARTEK and CODEY BURKI...Netminder TYLER PLANTE turned aside 32 of 34 RAIDER shots.
CLARK HONOURED: After scoring three goals and eleven points in four games last week, 18-year old center ANDREW CLARK was chosen the WHL Player of the Week, edging out linemates DERLAGO and REAVES...This marked the second straight week that DERLAGO has finished as a runner-up for the honour...A former NEEPAWA NATIVE, CLARK has five goals and 15 points in eleven games this season.
OTHER SCORING STATS: MARK DERLAGO has taken over the club scoring lead with 16 points including eight goals in 11 games...His 8 goals are good for a share of the team lead with CODEY BURKI...DERLAGO enters the weekend riding a 7-game point scoring streak and during that span he's 7-8-15...The streak is the third longest in the WHL this season...JURAJ SIMEK, the Slovakian born Swiss right-winger had his 7-game point scoring streak snapped Saturday night in SASKATOON. During his first 7 WHL games, SIMEK was 7-6-13. SIMEK is also third in WHL Rookie Scoring behind MARTIN HANZAL and KIRILL STARKOV of RED DEER...DUSTIN KOHN (2-9-11) is fourth among the league's top scoring blueliners...BRANDON currently occupies four of the top 12 spots in th e WHL scoring race (DERLAGO-16; CLARK-15; SIMEK and center CODEY BURKI - 14 points each).
MILESTONES: Defenceman DUSTIN KOHN, who is seven points away from the century mark in his WHL career, played in his 200th career game last weekend in SASKATOON...CODEY BURKI recently surpassed the 100-point plateau and the 200-game mark...Captain TEEGAN MOORE is ten points away from the century mark...Rookie defenceman MATT SMITH picked up his first WHL assist in Sunday's win over the RAIDERS...Goalkeeper TYLER PLANTE recently moved past RICK KNICKLE and RON HEXTALL and into seventh place on the club's all time list for minutes played. He's also one game away from moving into a 3-way tie for sixth place on the team's all time list...17-year old JOE CALIGIURI stopped 23 shots in backstopping BRANDON to last Saturday̵ 7;s win over the BLADES, making it a successful WHL debut for the former Manitoba AAA Midget League all star.
DID YOU KNOW? BRANDON'S powerplay leads the WHL with 19 goals on 69 opportunities (27.5%)...Penalty killing, the WHEATS are 17th (80.8%) in the 21-team circuit... BRANDON has been victimized for goals on five 5 on 3 powerplays...TEEGAN MOORE (shoulder) and CHAD ERB (shoulder) are listed as probable for this weekend's home stand...BRANDON has lost 20 man games to injury this year...BRANDON is 1-0-0 against the 'CANES this season after posting a 4-1-0 record against LETHBRIDGE last winter...Last Friday's Shootout loss to REGINA was BRANDON'S first overtime game of the season...Rookie netminder JOE CALIGIURI finished second in the Manitoba AAA Midget league last season with a 2.04 goals against average and 5 shutouts.
