Brandon Vickrey Wins Inaugural RailCats Radio Challenge

April 2, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - Portage High School freshman Brandon Vickrey has won the inaugural RailCats Radio Challenge, presented by 89.1 FM The Lakeshore, and will broadcast the Gary SouthShore RailCats May 31 game at U. S. Steel Yard against the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Vickrey, 15, was one of three finalists selected by a panel of RailCats and The Lakeshore judges at Fan Fest, then collected the majority of nearly 2,000 votes from different computers during the past week to win the final round of the challenge, outpacing fellow finalists Jordan Galligan and Mike Elledge. As posted on www.railcatsbaseball.com, only one tally was counted per computer and Vickrey finished with 59% of the vote.

An avid RailCats fan who lists his favorite 'Cats memory as private lessons from infielder Billy Malone - a member of the original 2002 traveling RailCats - Vickrey was announced as the winner Friday afternoon during Len Clark's Lakeshore Drive program. All three finalists had appeared on Lakeshore Drive in March to promote their candidacy.

As the winner Vickrey will join Andy Viano behind the mic for the RailCats Memorial Day game, calling play-by-play for the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Vickrey will then co-host Lakeshore Sports Tonight on 89.1 FM Wednesday, June 2 in advance of the RailCats game later that night. All three finalists were presented with a 20-voucher box seat flex package for their participation.

The RailCats congratulate all three finalists for their efforts and wish Vickrey the best of luck on the air!

The RailCats 2010 season begins Thursday, May 20 at 7 p.m. at U. S. Steel Yard against the Kansas City T-Bones. Season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are on sale now by calling the RailCats at 219.882.2255. For more information on the 'Cats upcoming season, check out www.railcatsbaseball.com.
