Brampton A's Make History as 1st NBL Canada Franchise to Hire Female Assistant Coach

August 20, 2014 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) - Orangeville A's News Release

Less than a year after making history as the first professional basketball team to hire a full time female play by play announcer (Meghan McPeak), and less than 2 weeks after the San Antonio Spurs rocked the NBA by making Becky Hammon the first female assistant coach in the NBA; the Brampton A's are proud to elevate Jacki Tipping to the position of full time assistant coach. In naming Tipping, the Brampton A's are the first team in the NBL Canada to hire a female assistant coach.

A's GM/Head Coach David Magley is thrilled to make the announcement, "I have watched Jacki since she was a high school student at IMG and a very good young player. She has always been serious about her craft and adds so very much to our program. A couple of years ago she was an assistant on our prep school team and I thought she did a great job then. Last season she did a little of everything as Basketball Operations Manager, (personal training, on court skill development, off court player liaison). Honestly, when the Spurs made the announcement of hiring Coach Hammon it did make me realize that I have a great resource already in our program that I hadn't yet considered for a greater role. I was thrilled she accepted when I approached her about the role."

Tipping is an Orangeville, ON native; she spent her last two years of high school playing for the IMG Academy basketball team. Upon graduation she played a year for Brock University in St Catharines, ON, before transferring to Washburn University in Topeka Kansas, where she ultimately graduated with a degree in Sociology. Following graduation, Tipping spent time training other athletes from her team before returning home and joining the staff at the Athlete Institute in Orangeville.

For her part, Jacki states "I really never gave it a lot of thought, I truly do love the game of basketball. I find myself working with the guys on the team and in conversations with Coach Mags on strategy quite a bit, so it is a natural career move for me." Having brothers like Jesse & Jameson Tipping, who both played for the A's last year make her life around basketball an every day occurrence.

The A's and the Athlete Institute host the NBL Combine this weekend, followed by the NBL draft on Sunday evening at 8:00 pm.

The A's will begin their second NBL Canada season on November 1st, with a home game against the Mississauga Power at the Powerade Centre on Kennedy Road in Brampton.
