Boyle leads Philadelphia to 22-11 win over Bayhawks

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Attackman Ryan Boyle scored five goals and added four assists as the Philadelphia Barrage (8-2) clinched a playoff berth with a 22-11 Major League Lacrosse victory over the Baltimore Bayhawks (3-6) at rain-soaked Villanova Stadium on Thursday evening.

The game was delayed by an hour and 20 minutes after a thunderstorm went through the Villanova area, marking the first rain delay for Baltimore since the 2003 season. The game was stopped with 2:22 remaining in the fourth quarter after a second thunderstorm arrived.

The Barrage took a quick 2-0 lead with 9:56 left in the first quarter on unassisted goals from midfielders Roy Colsey and Bobby Horsey. Midfielders Kevin Frew and Kyle Dixon quickly countered for Baltimore, tying the game with back-to-back goals with 7:10 left in the period. Colsey regained the advantage for Philadelphia with his second goal of the game, an unassisted tally past rookie goalkeeper Greg Havalchak with 5:15 left in the stanza.

Following a second rain delay, which lasted 57 minutes, defenseman Frank Luciano scored the first goal of his Major League Lacrosse career off an assist from midfielder Paul Gillette to tie the game at 3-3. Midfielder B.J. Prager regained the lead for Philadelphia by converting an assist from Boyle as the shot clock expired with 1:51 remaining in the period.

Attackman Mark Millon tied the game for Baltimore with an unassisted tally at the 6:31 mark of the second quarter, evening the score for the third time in the first half. The Barrage rebounded with consecutive tallies from Colsey and midfielder Michael Springer to take a two-goal advantage with 2:32 left in the first half.

Midfielder Bill McGlone opened the third quarter by converting a feed from Millon to narrow the gap to 6-5, but attackman Ryan Boyle scored back-to-back goals to spark a 4-1 Philadelphia run, expanding the Barrage lead to 10-6 with 8:11 left in the period. Attackman Matt Ward ended the spurt with an unassisted tally past Dougherty with 4:43 left in the stanza but attackman Jed Prossner responded by converting a Boyle feed for his 11th goal of the year, giving Philadelphia an 11-7 advantage.

Prager scored a pair of goals, including a power-play tally, to increase the lead to 13-7 before midfielder Mike Mollot ended the quick run with an unassisted goal with 56 seconds left in the quarter. Midfielder Paul Cantabene, facing his former team, won the ensuing face-off and scored an unassisted goal before Boyle added his fourth goal for a seven-goal cushion. Ward ended the period with his second two-point goal of the season to cut Baltimore's deficit to 15-10.

The Barrage scored seven of the eight goals of the fourth quarter before the game was called with 2:22 left in the fourth quarter.

Boyle was named the Bud Light MVP after scoring five goals with four assists while Dougherty made 13 saves in over 53 minutes of action. Colsey had four goals and an assist for Philadelphia as the Barrage scored the most goals against Baltimore in the 11-game series.

McGlone led Baltimore with two goals while Millon scored a goal with an assist. Havalchak made nine saves before being replaced by Matt Russell at the start of the fourth quarter.

The Bayhawks resume their two-game road trip next Saturday night when they travel to Boston to face the Cannons beginning at 7:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the Barrage begin a two-game road swing to end the regular season when they take on the Rochester Rattlers at PAETEC Park beginning at 7:00 p.m. next Saturday evening.
