
Boston Prepares for Showdown vs. Atlanta

NEEDHAM, MA (May 28, 2003) - The Boston Breakers left San Diego on Monday with a point earned after a 1-1 tie against San Diego. The Breakers also left the West Coast in a tie for second place with Atlanta in the WUSA standings, setting up this week's showdown with the Beat on Sunday, May 25th at Nickerson Field (7 p.m.). Boston hopes to keep its 13-game home-unbeaten streak alive. The last time Atlanta and Boston played, the Beat won, 6-0, on April 12th.
The Breakers are done with the three-game series against San Diego, which ended up 1-0-2 and a one-goal differential in Boston's favor.
Boston has five home are home five-out-of the next seven matches. Historically, May is not the Breakers favorite time of the season as the team has only won two games in three years in the month.
Kristine Lilly Bobblehead Night: The first 1,500 kids under 14-years old that enter the gates on Sunday at Nickerson Field will receive a Kristine Lilly Bobblehead. This is the first time the Breakers created a bobblehead for a player.
The M&M Girls: Maren Meinert and Dagny Mellgren have combined for 10 of the Breakers 12 goals this season. That means only rookie Devvyn Hawkins and Monica Gonzalez are the only other Breakers to have scored this season. Meinert has six goals and two assists while Mellgren has four goals and one assist. Meinert's two assists have set up two of Mellgren's goals.
Steppin Up: Breakers midfielder Erin O'Grady entered the game vs. San Diego in the 32nd minute replacing an ailing Stéphanie Mugneret-Beghe. The 5-foot-1 O'Grady made an immediate impact chasing down loose balls, making a number of dangerous crosses and getting a bid to score in the second half. O'Grady has played in five games and has recorded 181 minutes.
National Team Call Ups: Karina LeBlanc is with the Canadian National Team this week. She will return to Boston after playing against England tonight at Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa. Canada defeated England, 4-0, last night but LeBlanc was not present. She attended the funeral for the father of Christine Latham.
Welcome to Boston: Mary-Frances Monroe will practice with the Breakers for the first time tomorrow. The Connecticut native will meet her new teammates at a team meeting at 9 a.m. and get a chance to run through two practices on Friday at Nickerson Field (10 a.m. and 4 p.m.). Monroe was signed on Tuesday after the Breakers released rookie Marci Wallis.
Corner Kicks: Maren Meinert has increased her point-scoring streak to five games. Meinert is tied for first in points scored in the WUSA with 14 points. Meinert has scored a goal or an assist in six of seven of the Breakers games this season ... Dagny Mellgren has a goal or assist in five of seven games ... Jena Kluegel and Karina LeBlanc are the only two Breakers to have played every minute of every match this season ... Early Birthday wishes go out to Breakers defender Chrisy McCann who will turn 26 tomorrow.
