
Boston Cannons Return Home To Take On Washington On Thursday Night

BOSTON, MA - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 - The Boston Cannons (2-2) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) will match-up against the Washington Bayhawks (3-2) at Harvard Stadium on Thursday, June 19 at 7:30 PM. The game is the first between the two teams this season.
CANNONS' LAST GAME (JUNE 6 AT NEW JERSEY): Midfielder Matt Poskay (Virginia '06) netted five goals to earn Bud Light MVP honors as the Boston Cannons crushed the New Jersey Pride by a score of 17-8, in front of 2,674 fans at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, New Jersey, on Friday, June 6. The Pride owned a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Cannons fought back in the second frame to tie the game by a score of 7-7 at halftime. From there, the Cannons dominated the rest of the contest and allowed only one Pride goal in the second half, to run away with a 17-8 victory. Attackman John Christmas (Virginia '05) collected three goals and four assists, attackman Matt Alrich (Delaware '04) scored four goals, and rookie midfielder Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins '08) netted the first goal of his MLL career in his MLL debut. Goalie Kip Turner (Virginia '07) earned the win for the Cannons, his second of the season, with 13 saves on the 21 shots he faced in the contest. Pride goalie Rob Scherr (Johns Hopkins '03) made 26 saves on 43 shots for the loss. The Cannons were 3-for-3 on the power play, while the Pride went 0-for-4 on the man-advantage. Ben DeFelice (Towson '04) won 19 of 28 face-offs (67.9 percent) for the Cannons in the contest.
WASHINGTON'S LAST GAME (JUNE 14 VS. LONG ISLAND): The Long Island Lizards and the Washington Bayhawks both entered last Saturday's Eastern Conference showdown looking to extend their respective winning streaks. Led by midfielder Chris Fiore (UMass '03), the Lizards moved into a tie for first place in the East with a 15-11 victory over Washington at George Mason Stadium on June 14. The Bayhawks lost for the first time since their season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Barrage. Fiore was named as the Bud Light MVP for his six point effort (four goals, one two-point goal and one assist). Attackman Conor Gill (Virginia '02) scored two goals and three assists for the Bayhawks, while attackman Buggs Combs (Maryland '01) added four goals in the loss.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Attackman Mike Powell (Syracuse '04) is listed as 'probable' for Thursday night's game...Attackman Matt Alrich (Delaware '04) leads the Cannons with 14 goals, after collecting four goals in the Cannons' 17-8 victory over New Jersey on June 6...The eight goals allowed by the Cannons in their 17-8 victory over New Jersey on June 6 represent the lowest number of goals allowed by any MLL team so far this season...The Cannons have held an opposing team to nine goals or less in two of their four games this season, both times at the expense of New Jersey...Powell, Alrich, midfielder Ben DeFelice (Towson '04) and defenseman Ryan Curtis (Virginia '01) all suited up for the Bayhawks previously in their MLL careers...Goalie Kip Turner (Virginia '07) is ranked third in the league with a 12.86 goals-against average heading into this weekend's games...Midfielder DJ Andrzejewski (Penn '06) is the only Cannons player currently on the injured reserve list.
CANNONS ON TV: Thursday night's match-up between the Cannons and Washington is scheduled to air live nationally on ESPN2 as the MLL Game of the Week. Joe Beninati and Quint Kessenich will call the action.
This season marks the first time in the organization's history that all 12 Cannons games will be televised in the New England area, and 11 of the 12 games will be aired live. Three networks - Comcast SportsNet New England, CN8 and ESPN2 - will combine to televise the games.
