Boston Cannons News Release
BOSTON, MA - Wednesday, July 2, 2008 - The Boston Cannons (4-2) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), fresh off their third consecutive win at San Francisco on June 28, will return home to take on the defending MLL Champion Philadelphia Barrage (4-3) at Harvard Stadium on Thursday, July 3 at 7:30 PM.
CANNONS' LAST GAME (JUNE 28 AT SAN FRANCISCO): Attackman Mikey Powell (Syracuse '04) collected three goals and five assists for eight points to earn Bud Light MVP honors as the Boston Cannons defeated the San Francisco Dragons by a score of 21-14, and earned their third consecutive win, in front of 3,217 fans at Spartan Stadium on the campus of San Jose State University on June 28. The Cannons dominated early and built up an 11-2 lead in the second quarter before the Dragons were able to begin chipping away at the gap. The Dragons then tried to orchestrate a comeback with a four goal run in the fourth quarter, including one two-pointer, to close the margin to 18-14, but it wasn't enough as the Cannons netted three more goals to earn their fourth win of the season by a score of 21-14 over the Dragons. Midfielder Tom Zummo (NYIT '05) scored a career-best five goals and midfielders Matt Poskay (Virginia '06) and Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins '08) collected four goals each in the victory.
PHILADELPHIA'S LAST GAME (JUNE 28 AT WASHINGTON): The Philadelphia Barrage swept their season series with the Washington Bayhawks, beating them by a score of 14-13 at George Mason University on June 28. Attackman Mike Springer (Syracuse '03) was named as the game's Bud Light MVP for his five-point (4-1=5) performance. The Bayhawks seemed to run away with the game in the first quarter, scoring five goals and holding the Barrage scoreless during the 15-minute frame. The visiting Barrage took control in the second quarter, however, and dominated the rest of the contest until a late comeback effort in the fourth quarter by the Bayhawks, which came up just short. Barrage goalie Brian Dougherty (Maryland '97) made 24 saves in the victory.
