July 2, 2008 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

SNAP THOSE STREAKS!- With their 16-13 victory over the Denver Outlaws on Sunday afternoon, the Chicago Machine snapped a pair of long streaks. They snapped a five-game losing streak, dating back to a 10-9 loss against Los Angeles on May 25. In addition, the Denver Outlaws' four-game win streak ended with the three-point decision.

LONG ISLAND FIVE-O- With their 16-9 victory over the New Jersey Pride on Saturday night, the Long Island Lizards won their fifth straight game, upping their record to 5-2 on the season. Combined with losses by Rochester and Washington, the Lizards have moved into first place in the Eastern Conference by one-half game over Boston, which is 4-2 following its third straight win.

BOSTON BLACKJACK- The Boston Cannons scored a season-high 21 points in their victory over San Francisco on Saturday night, upping their win streak to three straight games. It was the first time that the Cannons have scored at least 20 points in a regular season game since August 5, 2006 when they defeated Baltimore by a 23-16 margin.

ZOOM GOES ZUMMO- Boston midfielder Tom Zummo posted the first five-goal game of his Major League Lacrosse career as the Cannons posted a 21-14 victory over the San Francisco Dragons. It was the fourth "hat trick" of his MLL career and the first since a three-goal effort at Rochester on July 29, 2006. Zummo's previous career high was a four-goal outing against Chicago on July 8, 2006.

ON THE HUNT- Los Angeles rookie attackman Kevin Huntley tallied the first five-goal game of his professional career in leading the Riptide to a 15-10 victory over the Rochester Rattlers on Saturday night. Named as the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week, Huntley also earned Bud Light MVP honors in just the third game of his brief MLL career. A 2008 graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Huntley scored five goals in a game four times while leading the Blue Jays to the NCAA title game three times in four years.

LONG TIME, NO SEE- The Long Island Lizards and the New Jersey Pride will meet for the second time in a week when the teams face each other at Mitchel Athletic Complex on Thursday night. Led by a four-goal, one-assist effort from Stephen Berger, the Lizards posted a 16-9 victory in the first meeting on Saturday night at Yurcak Field. The Lizards lead the all-time series by a 12-6 margin.

ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER- In their loss against Long Island on Saturday night, the New Jersey Pride tied a Major League Lacrosse record by scoring just one goal in the first half as the Lizards built a commanding 10-1 advantage. It was the first time a team was held to one goal in a half since Philadelphia held Boston to one goal in the second half on June 29, 2006.

ANOTHER GAME, ANOTHER WEATHER DELAY- For the third straight home game, the Washington Bayhawks had a weather delay after a 30-minute delay halted their game against Philadelphia on Saturday evening. With 6:01 remaining in the fourth quarter, the game officials stopped play due to lightning. Following the delay, the Philadelphia Barrage held off a Bayhawks rally for a 14-13 victory.

WE'LL SPOT YOU- The Philadelphia Barrage overcame a 5-0 first quarter deficit to defeat the Bayhawks by a 14-13 margin on Saturday night. It was the defending MLL champion's second win in the last three games. Goalkeeper Brian Dougherty, who was named as the MLL Goalkeeper of the Week, made 24 saves, including 15 in the first half.

OH, SO CLOSE- After scoring two goals in the Bayhawks' one-point loss against Philadelphia last weekend, Washington attackman Andrew "Buggs" Combs is just one goal shy of reaching 100 for his MLL career. A 2001 graduate of the University of Maryland, Combs has scored 17 goals this season for the Bayhawks. He had a career-high 27 goals during the 2006 season when he played for Rochester and Los Angeles.
