BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the Central Hockey League today announced the signing of new defenseman Mike Salekin for the 2009-2010 season. With training camp now less than two weeks away, Salekin becomes the 15th player and fourth d-man secured by the Mudbugs this year.
"Mike is a meat-and-potatoes, team-first kind of guy," said Head Coach Scott Muscutt. "He's the type of player who keeps his game simple and gets a job done. Guys like that help teams win hockey games. Look at his picture and you can see that he's a hockey player; he's not afraid to make sacrifices for the team, including his teeth."
Salekin, 24, comes to the Mudbugs for his third professional season after skating in the ECHL for the past two years. The 5-11, 195-pound blueliner began his pro career in 07-08 with the Reading Royals, where he notched 13 points (4g, 9a) and led the team with 183 penalty minutes in 49 games. He was also selected by Reading fans as the team's "Scrapper of the Year" after tying for the team lead in major penalties during his rookie season.
Salekin returned to the Royals to start last season before making his way to Stockton and eventually Cincinnati, where he would finish the year with the Cyclones. The Castlegar, British Columbia native played a total of 55 games last season, scoring nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points to go with 148 penalty minutes. He has also seen action in 22 postseason games with Reading and Cincinnati over his two seasons.
Prior to turning pro, Salekin played three seasons of college hockey at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (NCAA Division I). In 99 career games for the Chargers, he posted 19 goals, 32 assists and 205 minutes in penalties. Salekin was named to the CHA All-Conference Second Team and made the CHA All-Tournament Team as UAH advanced to the NCAA Tournament during his senior year.
