Dubois County Bombers News Release

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - In a possible playoff preview, the Terre Haute Rex utilized a five-run third inning to beat the Dubois County Bombers 5-4 Thursday night at Bob Warn Field.

"I had a decent outing - one bad inning - but you have to overcome those things," said starter Ty Simpson., who took the loss.

A two-run home run by Rex right fielder Patrick Chandler knotted the score at 2-2 after the Bombers had taken a 2-0 lead with one run in the second and another in the third. The Rex then strung together series of two-out hits to push their lead to 5-2.

"You can't let it get to you. Innings like that are going to happen," Simpson said. "It's how you deal with it that will make or break you."

Simpson dealt with it well, following his disastrous third inning with four scoreless frames. He finished his seven innings with five earned runs surrendered on five hits and three walks to go with five strikeouts.

The Bombers scored two runs in the top of the fourth to make it 5-4, Rex, but that was the end of the scoring.

The starting pitching matchup was billed as a battle of All-Stars. Simpson entered the game eighth in the Prospect League with a 2.72 ERA and fourth in innings pitched.

Rex starter Tommy Strunc came into the game leading the Prospect League in innings pitched and strikeouts, but he lasted only four innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and four walks. He struck out six.

Clay Manering relieved Strunc and earned the win, pitching four scoreless innings before yielding to Nick Blount, who recorded his eleventh save with a perfect ninth.

The Bombers play in Terre Haute again Friday evening at 7:05 before they host the Hannibal Cavemen for a pair this weekend.
