Dubois County Bombers News Release

A three-run top of the ninth provided the winning margin in the Dubois County Bombers' 7-4 victory over the Springfield Sliders Thursday night at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Ill.

Devin Nelson (2-0), in his third appearance for Dubois County, pitched a hitless eighth for the win, and Nick Green earned his fourth save with a scoreless ninth. John White took the loss for Springfield, only retiring one batter as he allowed three runs in the ninth.

The Bombers' late offensive heroics - they also scored two in the eighth to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 4-4 tie - rewarded some outstanding work from their bullpen.

Starter Ryan Billo, who last Friday allowed one run in eight innings vs. Quincy, could only get through four and two-thirds innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits and a pair of walks. Billo also struck out two.

Kurt Kudrecki came on and retired all but one Slider over the next two and one-third innings as he held the Sliders to four runs through seven innings and turned it over to Nelson and Green.

Starter Brandon Shaw pitched into the eighth for the Sliders, allowing three earned runs on three hits and four walks while striking out five. His success, JD Dozier, allowed the tying run as he worked the eighth for Springfield.

Dubois County jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, and Springfield responded with a run in both the second and third innings before scoring a pair in the fifth, ending Billo's night.

The Bombers got one back in the sixth on a two-out single by Jeff Zahn that drove in Rouleaux, and Kudrecki kept the score at 4-2 heading into the eighth, setting the stage for some drama.

Ausmus led the inning off with a home run, prompting Springfield to bring in Dozier, whose first pitch Frank Rawdow launched for another solo home run, his second consecutive game with a home run. Suddenly, the score was 4-4.

After Nelson's scoreless eighth, Chris Tavares led off the Bombers' half of the ninth with a single off White. Landon Curry, pinch-hitting for Brendan Neel, reached on an error by third baseman Jake Ingold, and Austin Nyman reached next when he was hit by a pitch.

After Tavares was forced out at home plate on an Ausmus grounder, Rawdow drove Curry in with a single, and Rouleaux followed with a single of his own, knocking in Nyman and Ausmus and giving the Bombers a 7-4 lead.

The Bombers and Sliders play again Friday at 7:15 at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Ind., where local product Ty Simpson - a native of Gentryville, Ind., and a student at Vincennes University - is scheduled to make the start.
