HUNTINGBURG, Ind. - Alex Britt pitched eight innings, and everyone in the Dubois County Bombers' lineup reached base in a 10-2 win over the Springfield Sliders Tuesday night at League Stadium.
"I did all right," Britt said. "Near the end, I walked a few guys because I was getting a little tired."
Britt (5-1) surrendered two runs - one earned - on four hits and four walks while striking out five in his eight innings. This was Britt's first start since July 17, when he threw a three-hit shutout against Springfield.
"It's nice to have those guys behind me though," said Britt of his teammates. "I couldn't ask for a better defense."
Wade Rothermich (3-1) took the loss for Springfield, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and one walk in his five innings. He struck out two Bombers.
The Bombers took the lead with a run in the second. Cody Daily led off the inning with a double and scored from third on a delayed double steal when Scott Windler, having worked a one-out walk after Zach Long sacrificed Daily to third, took off for second. Daily raced home as the throw went into second.
Dubois County scored three more in the third. Landon Curry singled, Dalton Rouleau singled two batters later, and Daily knocked them both in with a double down the right-field line. Daily then scored his second run on a single by Long.
The two teams traded runs in the fifth - David Kerian and Bo Ausmus with RBI hits for Springfield and Dubois County, respectively - before the Bombers put it away with a four-run sixth.
Jeff Zahn's two-out, three-run double off reliever Cale George capped an inning that saw Dubois County plate four unearned runs on two errors, two walks, a hit-by-pitch and only one hit.
The Sliders manufactured their own unearned run in the top of the seventh before the Bombers picked up their tenth run of the game on Austin Nyman's RBI double.
Travis Hayes pitched a scoreless ninth to finish the game.
"They've got a couple of guys who are real intimidating," Britt said. "They've got a real good team. It's a good win tonight."
The Bombers host the Quincy Gems Wednesday at 7:15 before heading to Quincy to start a three-game road trip. They host the Sliders Monday, August 6, to finish the regular season before their divisional playoff game August 7.
Britt's next start is that playoff game.
"If we keep hitting like that, we're going to be fine," Britt said.
