Blues Look to Make History vs LA Galaxy II Saturday Night
September 4, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Orange County SC News Release
IRVINE, Calif. (September 4, 2015) - As the biggest game of the season approaches, Orange County Blues FC (12-9-3, 39pts) will battle league rival LA Galaxy II (13-9-3, 42pts) on Saturday at Anteater Stadium, with a 7 p.m. PT kickoff.
Coming off a home victory over Portland Timbers 2, OC added another impressive three points to their playoff hopes. Chris Cortez netted an early goal in the 8th minute to give the Blues a 1-0 lead at halftime. Five minutes after the break, Cortez scored his second goal of the night through a powerfully struck free kick to put the Blues up 2-0. Denzel Slager made it 3-0 when he headed home at the far post following a wonderful free flowing move from the Blues. The game ended 3-1 with Portland converting a penalty late on. Cortez's brace and fantastic performance earned him national recognition as the USL Player of the Week and David Estrada also earned himself a place in the USL squad of the week.
LA most recently lost 2-1 as Arizona United SC's Long Tan opened the score in the 39th minute. While Galaxy II found the equalizer in the 74th minute by Bryan Olivera, Arizona dealt a crushing blow as they netted the game winner in the 90th minute.
The Blues are looking to make history and earn their first ever win against local rivals LA Galaxy II this Saturday. OC achieved their best result against LA with a 1-1 draw the last time the clubs met in July, however the Blues are looking to go one better this time around and get the victory. A win would give the Blues three vital points for their push to win the Western Conference. They currently sit tied for third in the Western Conference standings, and only three points behind second place Galaxy II. With only five playoff spots remaining, OC will look to continue improving their postseason chances.
The atmosphere is expected to be unbelievable with the match already nearing a sell-out. Blues fans are advised to arrive early to ensure you don't miss out on this pivotal fixture.
