Kentucky Bluegrass Stallions News Release
GEORGETOWN, Ky. - The Kentucky Bluegrass Stallions closed their 2011 home season on a high note today when they defeated the St. Johns Mill Rats 101-93 at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym in Georgetown.
The Stallions (6-13) got off to a slow start and trailed the Canadian invaders 27-23 at the end of the first quarter. But Kentucky used a pressing defense and up-tempo offence to run off 32 points in the second quarter and take a 55-51 lead at the half. Kentucky shot a torrid 60.0% for the period, including 50% from the three-point line. Henry Clay product Aubrey White came off the bench and sparked the Stallions with 11 points in the second quarter.
Kentucky scored the first four points of the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game, but St. Johns (8-8) went on an 8-0 run to tie it at 59 and set the stage for a contentious second half.
Unlike many games this year, the Stallions pulled out the victory by exhibiting tenacious defense and rebounding down the stretch. An offensive rebound and put back by Demetrius Guions at the 5:25 mark tied the score at 83 in the fourth quarter. Two free throws by Guions after another offensive rebound gave the Stallions their first lead of the fourth quarter, and yet another Guions offensive rebound and put back the following time down the court pushed the Stallion lead to 87-83 with 3:19 remaining.
Kentucky secured the victory by holding St. Johns to just two field goals over the final six minutes of the fourth quarter.
"It was a good win," said head coach Jaron Brown. "We finally all came together and played like a team, especially on defense. I hope this will roll over into next year so we can get (the franchise) where we all want it."
Six Stallions scored in double figures, including four who did not start. Bo Harris came off the bench to lead the team with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while White finished with 16.
Anthony Anderson led St. Johns with 26 points, and Marc Egerson chipped in 17.
