Cavalry defense stifles Bluegrass Stallions
January 26, 2011 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)
Kentucky Bluegrass Stallions News Release
Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry, the defending champions of the Premier Basketball League (PBL), used a suffocating defense to remain unbeaten and beat the Bluegrass Stallions, 113-to-103 on January 26 at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym in Georgetown.
A 17-to-0 run in the second quarter helped the Cavalry (6-0) take a 50-48 lead at halftime, and they assumed control by outscoring the Stallions 36-to-25 in the third quarter. Eddie Smith - who played at Texas A&M under former UK Wildcat coach Billy Gillespie - did most of the damage, scoring 12 of his game high 30 points during the period. The Stallions got no closer than 10 during the fourth quarter.
¬ÅWe didn't run our offense at all, ¬Â said Jay Shidler, the former UK standout who coaches the Stallions. ¬ÅWhen we did we got good looks, but for some reason our (players) kept trying to go one-on-one to get us back in the game. ¬Â
Shidler was particularly upset with the Stallions' defensive effort.
¬ÅWe were terrible on help defense, ¬Â he said. ¬ÅWe just stood around and let them do what they want. We didn't do anything well. ¬Â
The Stallions (4-4) lost despite dominating the boards. They out-rebounded the Cavalry 34-18 in the first half alone on their way to a nine-board advantage for the game, 52-43.
Former Pikeville College standout Bo Harris led the Stallions with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Starting point guard Jason McLeish contributed 17 points and three assists, while Demetrius Guions and Justin Taylor came off the bench to score 15 and 10, respectively.
