July 17, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
Bridgeport, CT- The Bridgeport Bluefish (7-3, 37-43) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (5-5, 40-40) Sunday afternoon at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The 'Fish have now won a season-high five straight games, and improve to 7-6 against the Skeeters in 2016. Bridgeport registers their 15th come-from-behind win on the campaign, and collect 13 hits in the process, marking the 36th time in 80 games played in which they have had ten or more hits in a single contest.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo (8-3) earned the win, giving up just two runs on four hits in six innings on the mound, walking two batters and striking out five. The All-Star now leads the Atlantic League in victories with eight, while notching his team-leading eighth quality start. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Brett Marshall (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in five and one third innings on the mound, walking and striking out two batters in the process. Jose Veras picked up his third save of the year for the Bluefish, pitching a clean inning of relief to end the game.
Sugar Land got on the board first against Albaladejo in the top half of the fifth inning as Beamer Weems drove home Travis Scott with the game's first run after Scott singled to open up the frame, the first hit allowed by Albaladejo in the game after he retired the previous 12 batters in a row, with the only other baserunner being former Bluefish Josh Prince after he opened up the ballgame with a walk. The Skeeters tacked on an insurance run in the top half of the sixth inning again off Albaladejo on a sacrifice fly by Scott, plating Prince which gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage. Bridgeport responded by batting around in the home half of the sixth, scoring five runs to take their first lead of the afternoon at 5-2. Luis Nunez drove home Welington Dotel with an RBI single to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Anthony Giansanti plated another run two batters later with a base knock of his own, allowing Jonathan Galvez to cross the plate with the tying run. Rossmel Perez would score the next run for the home team, as Adron Chambers launched a sacrifice fly to right field, giving Bridgeport their first lead of the day at 3-2. Luis Hernandez drove Perez home the following at-bat on with the second of his three hits in the game, extending his hitting streak to a season-high 16 consecutive games. Giansanti would come in to score the fifth run of the inning for Bridgeport on a passed ball that could not be gathered by Sugar Land backstop Albert Cordero, and the rally was complete as the 'Fish enjoyed a 5-2 advantage.
Bridgeport added two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh, extending to a 7-2 lead. A two out double by Nunez sent home Galvez for the second time in the game, and Nunez would score when Rossmel Perez singled to shallow centerfield. The Skeeters got right back back in the game in the top of the eighth, as Ricky Hague launched his 10th home run of the season to left field, a three run shot that cut Sugar Land's deficit to two at 7-5. Continuing the back-and-forth scoring, Bridgeport added two more runs in the bottom of the frame to go up 9-5, as Dotel collected two RBI's on a single that sent Hernandez and Chambers across the plate. Prince scored on an error by Dotel in the top of the ninth to get the Skeeters back within three runs, but it wasn't enough, as the Bluefish turned a 4-6-3 double play behind Veras to end the game as the home team held on for the 9-6 triumph.
