Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
Bridgeport, CT - The Bridgeport Bluefish (6-3, 36-43) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (5-4, 40-39) 10-2 on Saturday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The 'Fish extend their winning streak to four consecutive games, matching their longest of the season last set between June 10th and June 14th. Bridgeport has now taken the first two games of the four game weekend wraparound series and are in sole possession of second place in the Second Half of the Liberty Division Standings, remaining one half game behind the Long Island Ducks for the top spot.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Mike Antonini (4-6) earned the win, allowing just one run on four hits in five innings of work, walking two and striking out four. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Aaron Thompson (4-3) was tagged with the loss, surrendering a season-high eight runs on eight hits in two and two-thirds innings on the bump, striking out two while hitting a batter and issuing a free pass.
The Bluefish opened up the scoring in the home half of the third inning, sending 13 batters to the plate, matching a season high in runs scored in a single frame, soaring out to an 8-0 lead. The offensive barrage began with Luis Hernandez, as the shortstop dropped a drag bunt single to the right side to send Josh Vitters home and extend his hitting streak to a team-high 15 consecutive games. Welington Dotel would drive in a pair two batters later with a single that allowed Hernandez and Anthony Giansanti to cross the plate. Endy Chavez would score on the next at-bat when All-Star Jonathan Galvez picked up his 32nd run batted in of the season with a base knock of his own. Coming up to bat for the second time in the inning, Angelys Nina drove in Galvez and Dotel with his second single of the frame. Giansanti finished off the rally offensively for Bridgeport driving home Nina and Jose Gil with a two-run single.
The Skeeters comeback efforts would prove to be too little, putting up just two runs over the final six innings. The visitors responded in the top of the fourth as Travis Scott doubled to straightaway centerfield, scoring Delwyn Young to cut the deficit to 8-1. The 'Fish would tack on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Gil reached second base on a throwing error by Beamer Weems, allowing Dotel and Galvez to come home once again, giving Bridgeport a 10-1 lead. Sugar Land would add one more run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Jeremy Barfield, plating Josh Prince to give the game its final score of 10-2. Hernandez, Galvez, Nina, and Vitters led the offensive efforts for Bridgeport, each registering two hits in the contest. Photo provided courtesy of Dave Csordas.
