Bluefish Take Finale Over Bees

(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (20-30) defeated the New Britain Bees (24-25) 12-6 in the finale of a four game weekend series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday Afternoon. The victory marks the longest home winning streak for the 'Fish, as they pick up their third straight in the Park City in as many days, improving to 5-5 against the Bees on the season. New Britain drops three of four games over the weekend against their Liberty Division and in-state rival, and is now 2-5 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in 2016.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher D.J. Mitchell (1-1) was victorious in his first start of the season, spending five innings on the mound, allowing three runs while striking out two batters and issuing two free passes. New Britain Starting Pitcher Josh Outman (1-3) took the loss for the Bees, surrendering 11 runs on 13 hits in three and a third innings pitched, walking three and striking out two.

New Britain scored quickly in the top of the first inning, as Craig Maddox's sacrifice fly sent leadoff batter James Skelton home to with the game's first run, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead. The Bluefish answered in the bottom of the inning, as Jose Cuevas drove Luis Nunez home to tie the game at one after an inning of play. The Bees would then put up two more in the top of the second inning to take a 3-1 advantage after two innings. Jon Jones and Steve Carrillo were brought home by Skelton with two outs, as the catcher collected his second hit of the game and fourth in the series. The back-and-forth action continued as Bridgeport scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a one run lead 4-3 heading into the fourth inning. The 'Fish sent eight batters to the plate in the frame, placing the first five on base. Cuevas picked up two more RBI's sending Nunez and Welington Dotel across home plate with a double. A two-base hit by Jonathan Galvez would score Cuevas, as Bridgeport went ahead for the first time on the afternoon.

From there it was all Bluefish, as the home team put up seven runs on nine hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to leap to an 11-3 lead. Bridgeport sent a season-high 13 batters to the plate, including seven of the first eight reaching base. Dotel and Luis Hernandez both put up two hits in as many at-bats during the inning, with Dotel collecting three RBI's and Hernandez grabbing a pair. Cuevas reached base on a single to mark his fourth hit in as many at-bats, extending back to his walk-off homer the night before. This was followed by a ground-rule double by Galvez, one of three hit by Bridgeport in the game. A walk to Josh Vitters and back-to-back 'Fish singles paved the way for the top of the lineup to bat once again, as Hernandez, Nunez, and Dotel all collected hits. The Bees would put up a run in the top of the seventh, but it was matched by a solo shot by Cuevas in the bottom of the inning, giving the game its final score of 12-6. Cuevas lead the offensive efforts for the Bluefish, putting up four hits in five at-bats. After a seven game homestand and 14 of their last 17 games played in the Constitution State, Bridgeport will now hit the road, traveling to Regency Furniture Stadium on to take on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in a three game mid-week series beginning on Tuesday, June 14th, and the road trip will close out in the Keystone State as the Bluefish take on the York Revolution in a three game set next weekend. Bridgeport returns to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday, June 20th to take on the Lancaster Barnstormers, in a contest set to begin at 7:12 P.M. It will be Latin Heritage Night, and the first collector pin giveaway of the season.
