Bluefish Re-Sign Hurler Bateman

(Bridgeport, Conn. - Feb. 12, 2014) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the signing of pitcher Joe Bateman. Bateman returns to Bridgeport for his third year with the club.

"Joe proved himself to be one of the top relievers in the Atlantic League last season," says Bluefish manager Willie Upshaw. "We look forward to his contributions once again in the bullpen."

Last season, the 13-year pro compiled a 3-1 record with a 2.38 ERA, while appearing in 28 games (one start). He allowed a mere seven walks in 41.2 innings pitched while recording 37 strikeouts.

The Massachusetts native made his Atlantic League debut in 2012 when he split time between the 'Fish as well as the Lancaster Barnstormers. He combined for a 3-2 record in 52 appearances (22 with Bridgeport) while striking out 74 batters over 57.0 innings of work.

In 2010, Bateman recorded his best season as a professional with the Triple-A Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Rays) of the International League. He logged a perfect 7-0 record with a stellar 1.66 ERA, 66 strikeouts and a 1.08 WHIP in 54 games. The 33-year-old has also pitched in the San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics organizations. In 503 career appearances, he owns a 51-34 record with a 3.23 ERA, 56 saves, 759 strikeouts, and a 1.17 WHIP over the course of 786.2 innings pitched.

Joe was originally selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 32nd round of the 2002 amateur draft.
