Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgeport, Conn., May 17, 2003) – The Bridgeport Bluefish fell to the Nashua Pride, 9-1, on Saturday evening before 3,019 fans at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The loss broke the two win streak the Bluefish had hoped to feed off of.

Nashua started chipping away at the Bluefish early when two runners were able to reach base in both the first and second innings. The Bluefish escaped both innings keeping the game scoreless until the third inning when Nashua's Joe Kilburg was able to score off of D.J. Boston's right field double. The Pride's second run came off of Glenn Murray's single shot to center field that caught Bridgeport on their heels. The Pride kept the pressure on into the fourth inning when Damian Sapp's solo homerun shot over the left field wall gave Nashua their third run of the night making the score, 3-0.

In an attempt to relieve Brady Raggio, the Bluefish turned to their bullpen and LHP Terrence Hill. Hill walked in a run in the bottom of the seventh which shortly ended his time on the mound. RHP Javier Martinez came in to try to defuse the situation with bases loaded and one out. Quickly striking out Murray for the second out of the night. Nashua's Curtis Pride hit a two run single right in between the first and second basemen to make the score 6-0. Bridgeport's Ben Candelaria ended the inning by catching a high fly ball to right field hit by Nashua's Sapp.

The top of the eighth inning brought Nashua's Kilburg to bat against Martinez. After an interesting at bat, Kilburg homered over the left-field wall scoring Larkin from second base, improving Nashua's lead to 8-0. The bottom of the eighth brought the Bluefish bats to life when Rolo Avila knocked Jose Amado home with a centerfield shot, giving the Bluefish their first run of the night, making the score 8-1. Avila would advance to second on a Archie Corbin wild pitch. Jose Offerman was the last out of the inning as he grounded out to Nashua's Petersen.

The ninth inning brought Bridgeport's T.J. Mathews to the mound in an attempt to hold Nashua to their eight runs. Nashua's Curtis Pride doubled off a bobbled left field shot. Next at bat was Sapp, who doubled to right field, scoring Pride. Sapp would advance to third on a past ball. Mathews would end the inning himself striking out Larkin. Nashua's pitching change would occur in the bottom of the ninth with John Roper coming to the mound.

Nashua pitcher Corbin (2-0) picked up the win after a eight inning showing, after giving up one earned run, walking one batter and striking out seven. Raggio (0-2) took the loss for the Bluefish while allowing five runs off ten hits, one walk, while striking out seven.

Bluefish Manager Jose "Chico" Lind was ejected after a passionate plea to the first base umpire after a controversial double play by Nashua's Chris Petersen.

With the loss the Bluefish fall to 7-8 on the season while Nashua improves to 9-6. On Sunday the Bridgeport Bluefish will continue their weekend series against the Nashua Pride. RHP Brad Cornett (0-1, 3.20) will take the mound for the Bluefish opposing Nashua's RHP Paxton Crawford (1-2, 10.29).
