Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
Bridgeport, CT-- The Bridgeport Bluefish (6-4) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (5-5) 10-8 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday afternoon to take the rubber game of the three-game weekend series in the Park City. The win, coupled with a Somerset Patriots 2-1 loss at the hands of the York Revolution puts Bridgeport in a first-place tie with Somerset in the early stages of the First Half of the Liberty Division Standings.
Trailing 5-0, the Bluefish scored a pair of runs in the home half of the second inning on a two-run single by Yefry Reyes off Blue Crabs Starting Pitcher Austin Fleet to cut the deficit to 5-2. In the bottom of the third, Bridgeport plated another run on a double by Sean Burroughs, and once again Bridgeport trailed by three runs at 6-3. The 'Fish took their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom half of the fifth inning and never looked back, as they batted around and scored four runs to take a 7-6 advantage. Reyes was at it again during this rally, as his RBI single scored Daniel Fields, giving the Bridgeport shortstop three runs batted in on the afternoon. Fields gave Bridgeport the much needed insurance they were looking for in the bottom of the sixth, as his two-run single gave the boys from the Constitution State a 9-6 cushion.
Southern Maryland would claw their way back to within a single run at 9-8 with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. With the late innings having arrived, the 'Fish reached double-digits in the run column when Fields was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded against former Bridgeport pitcher Robert Carson, allowing Jose Cuevas to trot down the line from third to make it 10-8 in favor of the Bluefish. The dynamic bullpen duo of Manny Delcarmen and David Carpenter did the rest, retiring all six batters they faced, striking out three, with Carpenter shutting the door in the ninth for his fifth save in as many opportunities.
Fleet registered a no-decision, giving up three runs in two and two-thirds innings pitched. Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Charles Brewer also did not factor in the game's final outcome, allowing six runs (three earned runs) in five innings on the mound. Alex Burgos (1-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen for the 'Fish with an inning and a third of scoreless baseball. Cody Hebner (0-1) suffered the loss in relief, surrendering four runs (one earned run) in two and one-third innings pitched. Burroughs, Reyes, Fields, Alberto Callaspo, and Ozney Guillen (ten-game hitting streak) led the way for Bridgeport with a pair of hits each.
Bridgeport returns to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday, May 5th, when they welcome the Lancaster Barnstormers to the Park City for a three-game weekend series First pitch is scheduled for 7:12 P.M.
