(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (13-24) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (13-24), 7-3 Monday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The win gives Bridgeport their second straight and evens the series at two victories apiece. The Bluefish improve to 2-2 on their current seven game homestand.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Blake Beavan (1-0) earned the victory in his first start of the season, allowing just two runs (one earned) in five innings on the mound, walking one and striking out four. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Jon Leicester (2-4) lost was tagged with the loss, lasting five and a third innings, surrendering seven runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out four and allowing one free pass and a home run.

Southern Maryland scored the game's first run, as Bryant Nelson singled to send D'Arby Myers home in the top of the third inning to give the Blue Crabs a 1-0 lead. Bridgeport responded by sending eight batters to the plate while scoring four times in the bottom of the inning to give the 'Fish a 4-1 edge. The offensive efforts in the third were highlighted by back-to-back Southern Maryland errors, which paved the way for Luis Rodriguez and Dan Johnson to send runners home as Rodriguez collected a sacrifice fly and Johnson plated a pair with a double to left center field.

Angel Flores put the Blue Crabs within two in the top of the fourth, smacking an RBI double that sent Jamar Walton across home plate to make the score 4-2. Bridgeport's Jose Cuevas would seal the deal for the home team, en route to their sixth win at home, launching a three-run fence-clearer to left field in the bottom of the sixth to put the Bluefish on top 7-3. Southern Maryland's comeback efforts would fall short, as they would put up one more run in the next three innings at bat, stranding four potential scorers. Gary Brown's leadoff triple to start the top of the seventh put him in position to be driven home for the Blue Crabs as he scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of former Bluefish Bryant Nelson. Bridgeport's relief effort would prove to be solid, as Scott Shuman and Brian Moran combined to retire six of the final nine opposing batters in the last two innings of the game.
