Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT - July 5, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (26-44) defeated the York Revolution (24-46) 3-2 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday night on a two-run walk-off double by Jonathan Galvez. It was the second time this season that the Bluefish were victorious in their last turn at bat, with the last one taking place on May 7th, 7-6, in 14 innings over the Long Island Ducks. Bridgeport wins the rubber game of the series after losing the opener on Friday night and winning last evening on Independence Day.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Scott Maine was tagged with a no-decision, tossing seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, walking two, striking out six, and hitting one batter. York Starting Pitcher Frank Gailey also did not factor in the final outcome of the game, pitching four innings while not allowing a hit or a run, walking one and striking out three.
Bridgeport cracked the scoreboard first in the seventh inning off reliever Matt Neil on an RBI single by Jobduan Morales, plating Welington Dotel, who was on third base after stealing his league-leading 20th base and advancing on a throwing error by catcher Salvador Paniagua, and the 'Fish led 1-0.
York would come right back in the eighth inning off reliever Steven Ames and score two runs to take their first lead of the night at 2-1. Shannon Wilkerson's run-scoring single brought home Alfredo Patino with the tying run after he led off the frame with a base knock. The Revolution then jumped out in front on a two out RBI single by All-Star Bryan Pounds, scoring Wilson Valdez with the go-ahead run.
On came York All-Star reliever Stephen Penney looking to close the game out in the ninth, but the Bluefish had better ideas. Matt Wessinger singled with one out and Welington Dotel was hit by a pitch, moving the tying-run into scoring position and putting the winning run at first base. That brought up Jonathan Galvez, and he sent the Bluefish fans home on a happy note with an opposite-field, walk-off two run double on the ninth pitch of the at bat. Bluefish manager Ricky Van Asselberg put the speedy baserunners in motion on the three and two count and it paid off swimmingly and the celebration was on in the Park City, as Bridgeport closed out the first half of the regular season on a very high note, winning two consecutive games. Ames (3-4) earned the victory, pitching one inning, allowing two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out one. Penney (2-2) suffered the loss, going just one-third of an inning, giving up two runs on two hits and hitting one batter. Bridgeport collected four hits on the night, with Matt Wessinger, Dotel, Galvez, and Morales each picking up one.
The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday, July 13th when they welcome in the 2015 First Half Freedom Division Champion Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in the opener of four and a seven game homestand.
