BlueCats Win Four of Last Five Games to make Post Season

July 12, 2006 - United Indoor Football Association (UIF) News Release

Omaha, NE - The Evansville BlueCats (7-8) stamped their claim late in the season as one of the best teams in the UIF. After a frustrating start by beginning the season with a 1-4 record, the BlueCats went on a 4-1 ride to end the year. The Cats are coming into the post season with the fifth best record and the fifth seed for their shot to take the United Bowl II championship.

The BlueCats took the Sioux Falls Storm (the only undefeated team in the UIF with a 15-0 record) to the brink of one of the biggest upsets in the UIF this season. The crafty Eastern Division team came into the Storm Shelter and took the lead on three separate occasions and tied it once before the Storm crossed the goal line in the fourth quarter with four minutes left to seal the deal. Probably the biggest win for Evansville this season came in Week 14, when they hosted the Omaha Beef. The Beef put up the largest point total in the UIF this season (75) in an earlier match-up and the BlueCats did not forget that. Evansville took the Beef for a 28-17 victory and solidified their spot in the UIF post season.

In his first year as the Head Coach, John Hart has molded some of the young talent on his team into some of the best players in the UIF. John Winchester was second in the league for total tackles on the year with 112.5 and 87 of those were solo. Winchester averaged 8.0 or more tackles nearly the entire season. Vernon Turner was second on the team in tackles with 72.5 and also totaled five interceptions a nine pass break-ups on the year.

Also stepping into the lime light this season was all-league kicker, Ton-Ton Luzayadio. Luzayadio was at the top of the leader board for nearly every statistical kicking category and led the entire UIF in scoring this season with 174 points and averaged an amazing 11.6 points per game!

Also helping the offense was running back Dale Jennings. Jennings rushed for almost 400 yards this season and crossed the goal line 18 times. He also had three receiving touchdowns as well. Quarterback Aaron Leak threw for 1,216 yards in only 10 games with the Cats and threw for 20 touchdowns. Leak also rushed for eight touchdowns himself.

The BlueCats head back to the Omaha Civic Auditorium, the "Slaughter House," to take on the Beef in first round action of the 2006 post season. Game time is slated for 7:05 pm CST.
