Blue Sox Season Comes to a Close
August 1, 2012 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Valley Blue Sox News Release
The Blue Sox needed some help on the final day of the regular season to at least give them a chance to make it into the 2012 NECBL Playoffs.
That help did come as the Keene Swamp Bats did sweep their doubleheader against the Mountaineers, but since the Mountaineers took the season series against the Blue Sox, the Mountaineers are into the playoffs and Holyoke is done.
After finishing atop the Western Division in 2011, the Blue Sox find themselves at the bottom of the group in 2012, as they were able to only muster up 17 wins after racking up 28 in 2011.
Holyoke struggled on the road and at home, finishing the season with a 9-14 mark when playing in the friendly confines of MacKenzie Stadium, while going 8-10 on the road.
The Blue Sox were led offensively by one of the few players to return to the team in 2012, Paul McConkey.
The junior from the University of Kentucky led the team in batting average with a .358 mark and drove in 22 runs, which was best for second on the team and had 11 doubles as well.
Behind McConkey was Jordan Keur, who batted .302, but was an RBI machine pushing across 24 on the season, which was tops on the team.
On the mound Aaron Weisberg stuck out as he was able to put together a 3-1 record with 34 strikeouts to lead the team compared to just 14 walks allowed and threw 28.2 innings of work.
Another ace on the hill was Tyler Westensee, a junior from BYU, who went 2-1, turning in a 1.39 ERA, which was best on the team and posted 15 strikeouts compared to just five walks in 13 innings of work.
The Blue Sox had two players selected to the All-Star team as McConkey made his second-straight appearance on the squad and Scott Squier, who turned in 21.1 innings of work with just a 1-3 record, but nailed down 25 strikeouts compared to just 10 walks on the season.
Holyoke will now look towards rebuilding in 2013 with a new crop of talented collegiate athletes bringing their skills and bats to the NECBL for another exciting season of baseball.
