Blue Bombers Re-Sign All-Star Cornerback/Returner Jovon Johnson

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announce today they have re-signed import cornerback/returner Jovon Johnson. As per team policy, details of the agreement are not disclosed. Johnson originally signed with the Bombers as a free agent on April 29, 2008.
Johnson took the next step in becoming a star cornerback in the CFL in 2009, starting all 18 games in that spot for the Blue Bombers and being named the team's Most Outstanding Player. He finished the season with 75 defensive tackles, six interceptions - returning one for a touchdown, and picked up one tackle on special teams. He was named to the CFL All-Star Team for the first time in his career.
"I'm very pleased that we were able to reach an agreement for me to remain a Blue Bomber. I think we did some great things last season and I hope to build on that heading into 2010. The fans in Winnipeg are great and the support we get definitely weighed in on my decision. It's a great football city," Johnson said.
Not only did he solidify himself as a shutdown cornerback, but he also developed into one of the league's top return threats. He returned 65 punts for 593 yards and one touchdown, while also returning three missed field goals for 203 yards and one touchdown (118-yarder vs Edmonton, Oct 2, 27-17 W). Johnson won the Special Teams Player of the Week in week's 14, 15 and 17.
Ross Hodgkinson, Interim VP of Football Operations, stated, "Jovon was stellar for us last season, hence the Most Outstanding Player award. He is a real shutdown guy on the corner, and with his ability to return kicks, this was a guy we simply could not let get away. We are very excited to return Jovon to our lineup in 2010 and beyond."
