Bloomington Thunder News Release
The Bloomington Thunder are the hottest team in the Southern Professional Hockey League as they ride a three-game winning streak into the final game of 2013, a New Year's Eve celebration at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
We're going streaking: The Thunder have the SPHL's longest current winning streak as they have captured three straight games for the first time after sweeping the Fayetteville FireAntz in North Carolina during the past weekend. The Thunder overcame a tying goal with 1:44 remaining to beat the FireAntz 2-1 on Friday on Kyle Watson's goal with 3.1 seconds left. The Thunder then jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period on Saturday and rode to a 5-2 triumph featuring a hat trick from Dennis Sicard. Max Strang took the win in net both nights with 40 saves on Friday and 37 stops on Saturday. Strang also was the winning netminder in the first game of the streak, a 4-1 win at Peoria. The Thunder are now 3-1-0 against the FireAntz with all four games played in Fayetteville. The teams meet three more times, all in Bloomington.
Roster-faria: The Thunder have added defenseman Peter Cintala in a trade for cash with the Louisiana IceGators. Cintala recorded two assists and 45 penalty minutes in 23 games with the Gators this season. Cintala is 6-3 and 231 pounds and is a 26-year-old native of Kosice, Slovakia. He is in his fourth professional season. After forwards Kevin Walrod and Sy Nutkevitch and defensemen Dustin Hopfner and Paul Arnott were called up to ECHL teams last week, the Thunder added defenseman Trevor Jewell, returned defenseman Kory Helowka and added forward Zac Pearson, the head coach of the Bloomington Junior Blaze.
A little more special: Despite giving up a league-leading 35 power play goals, the Thunder have only surrended one power play tally during the three-game winning streak and none during the two-game weekend at Fayetteville.
New Year's Hockey Eve: The Thunder are planning a New Year's Eve celebration on Tuesday as they host the rival Peoria Rivermen for a 7:05 p.m. face-off. Beer, soda and hot dogs are only $2 plus kids 12 and under eat free until the first Thunder goal. Kids will also receive a treat bag while they last and be part of a special "midnight" celebration. The Thunder will wear special New Year jerseys, which will be auctioned immediately after the game. The Thunder and Rivermen rematch in Peoria on New Year's Day with a 5:15 p.m. face-off. The Thunder travel to Columbus, Ga. for games on Friday and Saturday to conclude a busy stretch of six games in nine days.
