Blizzard Splits Weekend Series

December 5, 2005 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Alexandria Blizzard News Release

Once again at home the Blizzard played an intense game against a top opponent.

It was a low scoring affair with only three total goals in the game.

The game started with a lot of penalties, a little bit of mistake ridden play for both teams. The Blizzard took the lead in the first period with a Jonny Breuer (assisted by Brett Burgau and Scott Motz) goal. After playing two games last weekend against one another both teams battled until the whistle and sometimes a little after the whistle. Ryan Adams knocked in a goal for the Jets in the second period and Phil Fox took the lead in the third. Fox took a slapshot from just outside the offensive blueline that knuckled on the way to the net and slipped by goaltender Dustin Carlson of the Blizzard. During the third period both teams fought to the finish with a bitter rivalry status, getting nine penalties collectively, but the Jets held onto the lead even after the Blizzard pulled their goalie. The Jets won 2-1 in hard fought game.

As fierce and as intense as the previous days' game, this one was a heavyweight fight with each team giving and taking punches. Starting it off was Eric Borre who scored (assisted by Sam Kelly and Austun Tavis) in the first period. The Fargo-Moorhead Jets' Phil Fox, who seems to have the Blizzard's number, scored a second period unassisted goal to tie up the score. The Blizzard's Brett Burgau lit up the lamp with two second period goals (Henderson &Shelafoe, Breuer & Motz with the assists). The Jets kept the game alive by scoring three more goals in regulation to take a 4-3 lead. The Blizzard won't quit and the teamwork of Paul Henderson, Chris Johnson, and Scott motz led to Motz scoring the game tying goal to force it into overtime. The overtime was back and forth. The Blizzard's Rylan Galiardi scored on the teams' second attempt of the shootout. Kai Kantola would not let them win that easily as this Jets player knocked in the fourth shootout attempt. It was Dan Swanson beautiful deke on B.J. O'Brien that gave the Blizzard a shootout win, 5-4. Max Dodds played brilliantly in net stopping 51 shots on the night.
