Bakersfield Blitz News Release
BAKERSFIELD, CA (April 15, 2002) â In what might be the most difficult road trip in arenafootball2, the Bakersfield Blitz traveled to the island of Oahu and came away with an impressive 52-32 win over the Hawaiian Islanders Saturday night in Honolulu. The win boosts Bakersfield's record to 2-0 and moves the team into sole possession of first place.
The Blitz held a narrow 26-23 lead at halftime before applying a stifling defense in the second half and wearing down the Islanders on both sides of the ball. Bakersfield outscored Hawaii 26-9 after the break.
Quarterback Chad Elliott completed 23 of 35 passes for 267 yards and 5 touchdowns. Offensive Specialist Steve Wofford, who hauled in 13 total receptions for 132 yards, caught three of those touchdown tosses and was named the game's Most Valuable Player.
After two games, the Blitz ranks eighth in the league in scoring, averaging 50.5 points per game and is second in the league in total offense at 296.5 yards per game. Chad Elliott is second in the league in passing yards per game at 304.0. He has thrown for 608 yards and nine touchdowns in only two games so far and has only thrown one interception.
The Bakersfield Blitz kicks off its home schedule this Saturday, April 20th at the Centennial Garden against the Louisville Fire. Kickoff is set for 7 pm with the pre-game tailgate party starting at 5 pm in front of the Garden where local band Mento Buru will play from 5 â 6:30. There will also be hot dogs and hamburgers to eat, beer and soda to drink, face painting and a bounce house for kids.
Tickets are on sale now at the Centennial Garden box office and all Ticketmaster locations. Season tickets are also still available by calling 1-866-GO-BLITZ.
More than two million fans have attended arenafootball2 games in the league's two-year history. In 2000, af2 began its inaugural season with 15 teams. The league expanded to 28 teams in 2001, and 34 teams this season, making it the fastest single-league expansion in the history of sports.
