Blitz Round out Coaching Staff

(Bakersfield, CA) - The Bakersfield Blitz of the arenafootball2 league hired two new coaches and retained kicking coach Lorenzo Alvarez for the 2006 season, head coach Gary Compton announced today.

The franchise named Cedric Walker Defensive Coordinator, Cory Stone Line Coach and retained Lorenzo Alvarez as Kicking Coach.

"I am very excited to finalize our coaching staff," said Compton. "Each of these coaches brings a unique element of coaching to our staff and will each be instrumental in leading a successful team."

Walker, who retired as a player this past season, will be taking on his first ever coaching position in the af2. In ten seasons as a defensive specialist in the Arena Football League, Walker tallied 613 tackles (521-solo), 85 pass deflections, 10 forced fumbles and 23 interceptions including one for a touchdown.

After playing at Stephen F. Austin University, where he was a Four-time All-Southland Conference selection, Walker was signed by the Chicago Bears in 1994 and 1995 participating in training camp before being released. From 1996-2005, he played in the AFL with the Charlotte Rage (1996), Orlando Predators (1996), Arizona Rattlers (1997-2000), Chicago Rush (2001), Indiana Firebirds (2001), Chicago Rush (2002-2003), Austin Wranglers (2004-2005) and the Las Vegas Gladiators (2005). Walker led the league in tackles in 1997 and 2002 and was a finalist for the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2002.

Walker, his wife and their two children currently reside in Victorville, CA.

Stone, who also retired this past season, will begin his rookie season as a coach overseeing the offensive and defensive line. After a seven year career in the AFL he amassed 45.5 tackles (34-solo), 3.5 sacks and three pass deflections.

Stone played collegiate football at the University of Tennessee from 1990-1994. After leaving college he participated in training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being released. He began his career in the AFL with the Memphis Pharros in 1996 and also spent time with the Milwaukee Mustangs (1998), Iowa Barnstormers (2000), New York Dragons (2001-2002), Carolina Cobras (2004) and the Philadelphia Soul (2005).

Stone currently resides in Atlanta, GA.

Alvarez, will rejoin the franchise for his third season as kicking coach, while continuing his kicking coaching duties at Bakersfield College where he has been since 1987. Prior to joining the Renegades staff, Alvarez spent time as an assistant coach at East Bakersfield High from 1983-1986.

The Porterville, CA native attended Baylor University and California State University Bakersfield where he was a two-sport star in football and track.
