Bakersfield Blitz News Release
Tonight is the official start of Arena Football season in Bakersfield with Blitz Bowl IV slated for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. Opening Night for the Blitz 2005 season is just two days away, as the Blitz will host the Central Valley Coyotes this Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Rabobank Arena.
Blitz Bowl is the annual high school arena football all-star game that pits East vs. West with Team West leading the all-time Blitz Bowl series 2-1. The West team will be headed up by Rich Cornford, who has served as the head coach at West High since 2001. East High Head Coach Jim Maples will lead the East Team. Tickets are just $10 for the lower level and $5 for the upper level. All high school students can purchase lower level seats for just $5 with their student ID.
Everyone in attendance at Saturday's season opener will get a Blitz 2005 magnet schedule, sponsored by KGET-TV 17, The Big 96.5 and Fitness 19. The Blitz open up their West Division Title defense with three games at home during the month of April, with their first of two bye weeks next weekend. The Blitz was 7-1 during the regular season at home last year and hosted a second-round playoff game for the first time in Bakersfield history.
Saturday's Blitz game will also be heard live on KERN "Newstalk" 1410, starting with Countdown to Kickoff at 6:45 p.m. Vance Palm will handle the play- by-play from the Rabobank Arena.
The Blitz made several roster changes since announcing their 21-man roster on Monday. The QB position has been trimmed to two players with the release of Rich Lucero yesterday. Also released were OL/DL David Lose and Kamaloni Manu and FB/LB Anthony Suggs. Several players were added to the lineup, including K Dan Burnett out of Georgia Tech, and FB/LB Jabari Jackson, who played college football at USC and appeared in five games with the Coyotes in 2004. OL/DL Dwayne Johnson, who played two games with Central Valley last season after playing at Iowa State, was also added today.
The Blitz 2005 schedule includes eight games at home and eight on the road. Friday Night Football will hit the Rabobank Arena this season, as all home games but Opening Night will take place on Friday nights. The Blitz will compete in the National Conference West Division along with the Central Valley Coyotes, Rio Grande Valley Dorados, San Diego Riptide and the Tulsa Talons.
