Alabama Steeldogs News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Birmingham Steeldogs have announced that they have been assigned former UAB Blazer Marlon Bush and former SMU Mustang Thornton Chandler.

Bush was one of the mainstays on the 2001 Blazer defensive front that finished number one nationally in rushing defense and ranked fifth in total defense. That season, his senior year, Marlon made 37 tackles including five for loss while also forcing seven QB hurries. The 6-3, 285-pound lineman finished his four years at UAB with 107 career tackles, four sacks and 16 pass breakups. Bush was named to the Alabama Sportswriters Association 3A “Team of the 1990’s” for his work as a three-year starter at East Limestone High School.

The Steeldogs also added some size up front with the addition of former SMU Mustang Thornton Chandler. The 6-4, 280-pound lineman started nine games for the Mustangs as a true freshman during the 1999 season, playing defensive tackle. As a sophomore was moved to the offensive line and over the final three years with SMU made 19 starts at either the center or guard position. Chandler was a first team All-State selection following his senior prep season at Raines High School in Jacksonville, Florida.

“We are extremely excited about the potential of these two young men,” said Steeldogs Head Coach Bobby Humphrey. “This is the best line unit we have brought into the start of training camp and there will be a lot of competition for playing time and roster spots.”

Season tickets to the Steeldogs 2004 season are currently available with packages starting at just $64. The home opener is set for Saturday, April 10th versus the Memphis Xplorers. For more information, contact the Steeldogs Ticket Office at 205.458.8833.
