Bakersfield Blaze News Release

In Daniel Renken's first start in Bakersfield, the righty got as much run support as anyone before him, as the Blaze smashed the Jethawks 20-7 in the finale of 3 at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

Lancaster scored an early run off Renken, but Ryan La Marre quickly tied the game at 1 with a solo homer. Then the game got out of hand. The Blaze scored 4 runs in the second inning to drive Lancaster starter Zach Grimmett (L, 4-9), but the first man out of the pen did little to calm the storm. Lancaster's David Flores hit a 2-run shot in the 3rd to cut the Blaze lead to 5-3, but in the bottom half, the Blaze sent 12 men to the plate, scored 6 times, and took care of two relievers in the process.

Each team tossed a scoreless 4th, but Bakersfield went right back at it in the 5th. The Blaze put together the team's second 6-run inning of the night, this one highlighted by an Alex Buchholz grand slam home run into the rightfield catwalk.

For the Blaze, Renken went the requisite 5 innings to collect his first Cal League win (he's 1-0), and the combination of Scott Gaffney, Mace Thurman, and Doug Salinas finished the game, with Salinas allowing 3 runs in a meaningless 9th.

The Blaze scored their final 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th off position-player Andy Simunic, who was called upon to pitch.

With that win, Bakersfield takes the series 2 games to 1, and breaks even on the season series with Lancaster, 3-3. Tomorrow, the Storm come to town for the first of four. It's Goodwill Giving Night, so bring a donation item and get in for half price!

If you can't make it, listen live to Dan Besbris on BakersfieldBlaze.com -- first pitch at 7:45pm, pregame show at 7:35.
