(BAKERSFIELD, CA) --The Lancaster JetHawks used a position player to pitch for the first time in three years as Bakersfield routed Lancaster 20-7 Tuesday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark. The Blaze win salvaged a split in the season series as each team won three times.

The teams traded runs in the first inning. Simunic walked for Lancaster and stole second base before scoring on a wild pitch.A Blaze home run tied the score in the bottom of the first.

The first sign that it would be a big night for Bakersfield came in the second inning when they scored four times and drove Lancaster starter Zach Grimmett out of the game.However, David Flores blasted a two-run home run for the JetHawks in the third inning to bring the team back to within two.

The Blaze erupted again against the Lancaster bullpen. They scored six times in the third inning and six more to pull away.

After scoreless innings of relief from Kyle Greenwalt and Patrick Urckfitz, the JetHawks their thoughts to saving pitchers for use in the next few games.Thus they summoned Simunic from his spot at second base.Simunic allowed three singles and two walks to the first five batters he faced, but got a sacrifice fly and a double play grounder to finish his pitching debut.Simunic has now played all positions on the field except catcher.

The last time the JetHawks used position players to pitch came in 2008 when outfielder Daniel Nava and infielder Luis Segovia both pitched in a game in Lancaster against Inland Empire.

The JetHawks return home Wednesday night to open a four-game home series against the Inland Empire 66ers.Bobby Doran (1-3) will start for Lancaster against Manuel Flores (10-7) of Inland Empire.The game starts at 7:00 and will be broadcast live on radio by 87.7 Kickin' Country and online at CSN at JetHawks.com (click the listen live link).The Pre-Game Show starts at 6:45.
