Waterloo, Iowa-As the 2013/14 United States Hockey League season melts down to its final weeks, the Waterloo Black Hawks and their fans came together to look back on an exceptional campaign, which remains full of promise, during the organization's annual awards banquet, held at Sunnyside Country Club Sunday.

"This day provides reflection, yet it also still provides opportunity," noted Head Coach P.K. O'Handley, in reference to the five regular season games remaining on the Black Hawks schedule as Waterloo duels for the league's top spot. "The group we have here," O'Handley continued, "has all the ingredients, and the pen is in their hands to write the story [they] want."

The presentation of awards began with an honor delivered to Austin Vieth by the Black Hawks' Booster Club, recognizing a combination of on-ice effort and positive off-ice interaction with fans and the community at-large.

Dane Cooper earned his second consecutive Slumberland Furniture Fan's Choice Player of the Year Award. Slumberland Fan's Choice voting raises funds for local non-profit organizations. This is the sixth consecutive season the fans have chosen a defenseman.

Another defenseman, Alec McCrea, received the Roth Jewelers Front Office Award, given annually to a player who provides exceptional assistance to the Black Hawks' business operations staff.

Goaltender Cal Petersen was recognized with the organization's Community Service Award after dedicating the most time to volunteer projects throughout the season.

O'Handley presented a variety of honors for on-ice play - made more special, because the recipients were determined by a ballot of their teammates. Forward Tyler Sheehy was named the team's Rookie of the Year. Another rookie forward, Tyson McLellan, earned distinction as the Hawks' Most Improved Player.

Voting for the club's other three honors ended in ties. Unsung Hero recognition went to both defenseman Derek Pratt and forward Blake Winiecki. McCrea and Petersen each received a plaque for the team's Hardest Worker honor. The presentations concluded as the title of "Most Valuable Player" was conferred upon both leading scorer Peter Krieger and blue-liner Brandon Montour, the league most accomplished offensive defenseman.
