Black Hawk Veterans Picked for USHL Showcase

Waterloo, Iowa-Rosters for the United States Hockey League Prospects/All-Star game were released by the league Tuesday, including Waterloo Black Hawks forwards Craig Smith and Nick Larson.

"This is great for Craig and Nick," said Waterloo Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "Both have grown during their time with the Black Hawks, not only improving their skills on the ice, but also as leaders and young men. They will represent Waterloo well."

Smith is in his third season with the Black Hawks and is serving as team captain. He is currently the USHL's third-highest scoring player with 15 goals and 23 assists in 25 games. Smith is one of two forwards in the league to record a point in ten consecutive games this year, and on two separate occasions he had a goal in five consecutive appearances. In November, he was captain of the U.S. Junior Select Team, which won the gold medal at the World Junior A Challenge in Alberta. Smith is committed to the Wisconsin Badgers.

Larson played for Waterloo in 2007-2008 and opened this season as the Black Hawks top returning scorer from a year ago. Playing very well of late, Larson has five goals and an assist in his last seven appearances. For the season, he has ten scores and four assists in 24 games. He was a member of the U.S. Junior Select Team with Smith, and is the only All-Star who also participated in last season's All-Star contest in Green Bay. Larson will play for Notre Dame after wrapping up his junior career; over the summer he was drafted by the Calgary Flames.

The 19th USHL Prospects/All-Star game will be played in Sioux Falls on Wednesday, February 4th between teams from the USHL East and West Divisions. Each All-Star squad will have 20 players, as chosen in balloting by USHL coaching staffs. Two goalies, six defensemen, and twelve forwards were picked from each half of the league.
