Black Bears Win 5th Straight Series
July 3, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Walla Walla: Jeff Gold (University of Oregon) pitched a gem to secure another series win for the Cowlitz Black Bears. The righty went the distance in a two-hit shutout of the Walla Walla Sweets, statistically the best performance by any Black Bears starting pitcher this season.
The team previously recorded two three-hit shutouts against West Coast League opponents, but the combined score of those games didn't equal the firepower on display in this game. Mitchell Walding (St. Mary's HS) opened scoring with a bases-loaded, 3RBI double in the second inning. Cowlitz would tack on seven runs in that frame, and a single run in the following two to coast to the 9-0 win. Braxton Miller (Lewis-Clark St.) led the Black Bears offense by going three for four with a walk.
The Black Bears return to Story Field tomorrow, July 3rd, for a contest with the Portland Stars. The team will celebrate the 4th of July with a Fireworks Extravaganza after the game. It's also Elder Options Senior Sunday, where seniors get a $2 discount on tickets. Members of the Cold Stone Creamery Kids Club will get in for free. Please note that the first pitch is at 6:35 pm, not the usual 5:05 pm start time for Sunday home games.
