Cowlitz Black Bears News Release

Klamath Falls: June 27, 2012: It may not have been as good as "The Catch" by Derrick Salberg, but it was awfully close. With the Cowlitz Black Bears clinging to a one-run lead, a Klamath Falls hitter crushed a ball destined for extra bases before Black Bears outfielder Brian Carroll (UCLA) slammed into the centerfield wall on the run and pulled the ball in with his back to the plate, a play that helped seal a 5-4 Black Bears win over the Klamath Falls Gems.

After falling behind 2-0, the Black Bears scored all five of their runs in the fifth inning. Tyler Madrid (Santa Ana) had an RBI double and the squad took advantage of three errors to score four more runs, all unearned.

Cole Irvin (Oregon) got the win for the Black Bears, allowing three runs in five innings. Tommy Nance (Santa Clara) relieved him and was stellar in allowing just one run in three innings. Thanks to the Carroll save and a stellar double play turned by Brian Frattali (Portland), Kody Watts (Portland) got the save.

The Black Bears next home game is a doubleheader against Bellingham on Sunday, July 1st that begins at 5:05 PM. It will be Best Care-Local Care Presents Kids Club and Senior Sundays. There will be a $2 discount for all seniors. Kids Club members get in for free and all kids get to run the bases after the game.
