Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Longview-Kelso, Washington, Wednesday, March 14, 2012: The Cowlitz Black Bears have signed two impact players for the upcoming 2012 season, Brian McAfee, a freshman from Cornell University, and Corey Oswalt, who has committed to play at UC Santa Barbara.
McAfee, a right-handed pitcher, led Bothell HS to the 2011 Washington state 4A championship, posting a 10-0 record with seven shutouts and 0.55 earned-run average. He was named the Washington state 4A Player of the Year and earned a spot on the First-Team All-State Team. McAfee earned first-team all-league honors in both his junior and senior campaigns, serving as captain both years.
"When associate head Coach Tom Ford (Cornell University) called us about Brian, we jumped on the opportunity. His high school success here in the Pacific Northwest is legendary, and the reports about his character are just as impressive," said Black Bears general manager Grant Wilson.
Oswalt, a third-baseman, grew up in San Diego, CA, and was a member of the 2011 Milwaukee Brewers Area Code team, later playing for the Rays Scout team in the Senior Fall Classic. Oswalt also was named to the Perfect Game All American Team in 2011. At 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, Oswalt is a physical player with the ability to drive the ball out of the ballpark.
"Corey is what every team is looking for, a big strong build with a strong arm and classic power at third base" said Black Bears Head Coach Tim Matz.
