Black Bears Lose in Extra Innings
August 8, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Longview-Kelso: August 7, 2011: *The Cowlitz Black Bears rebounded from a tough loss last night to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to two doubles by Kevin Schwartz (Pacific University) and Mitchell Walding (St. Mary's of Stockton HS/ Phillies Draft Pick).
Ian Ekery (University of Missouri) pitched well enough for the win, but he gave up two solo home runs that served as to foreshadow of what was to come. In 6.1 innings, Ekery struck out three and walked one while spinning eight Sweets hits into only 3 runs. Walla Walla would score the tying run in the 9 th and the winning run in the 10th on another solo home run.
The extra-inning loss spoiled a comeback performance for the Black Bears offense, which recorded 13 hits. Bailey Graham (LCC) was three-for-four with a double, Walding added two singles to that double, and Braxton Miller (Lewis-Clark St.) went two-for-four with a sac fly RBI.
The team returns to Story Field for the final game of the season on Wednesday, August 10th against the Corvallis Knights. The game should have playoff implications. I will be the final Burgerville Family Night, with 4 tickets, 4 sodas, and 4 hot dogs for only $28. It will also be Fan Appreciation Night, with tons of big-ticket prizes (such as a gas grill) given away all game long.
