Black Bears Lose by One Run to Kitsap
June 3, 2012 - West Coast League (WCL)
Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Kitsap: In a game very similar to the season opener, solid early pitching and a ninth inning rally weren't enough for the Black Bears to withstand a late offensive breakthrough by the Kitsap Blue Jackets. The 7-6 loss drops the Black Bears to 0-2 for the season.
It was a scoreless pitcher's duel through five innings before Cowlitz finally broke through against Mitch Bluman, scoring an unearned run. However, The Blue Jackets bounced back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single by Dallas Hessler and a two-run, go-ahead single by Curtis Wildung. Both teams added a run in the seventh before Kitsap got a cushion with a three-run eighth inning. The Black Bears mustered a valiant ninth inning rally for the second night in a row, scoring four runs, including two on Brian Frattali's third hit of the evening. Frattali was stranded at first however as Kitsap's Drew Staples got a strikeout to end the game.
Frattali led the way offensively and was one of four Black Bears to record multiple hits. Cody Childs, Jordyn Van Atta, and Cody Childs recorded two hits apiece. Mikey Murray got the start and the dynamic lefty held the Blue Jackets scoreless through five innings before finally tiring.
Despite the second straight loss, Black Bears Manager Tim Matz isn't sounding the alarm bells. "It's still so early and I really love the way the boys have competed through the last two nights," Matz said.
The Black Bears complete their three-game series with Kitsap on Saturday before Tuesday's opener presented by Longview Fibre Paper & Packaging. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a magnetic schedule presented by Three Rivers Mall. A post game firework display will light up the night sky.
