Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - After dropping two games to open the series, the Biscuits (30-31) used 15 unanswered runs to sweep the doubleheader against the Biloxi Shuckers (31-30) by scores of 11-4 in seven innings and 7-0 in five on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Tyler Black doubled off the right field wall and stole third base before advancing to home plate off a throwing error to make the score 1-0 for Biloxi in the top of the first. Despite the early run in his fifth start, Victor Muñoz (5-3) settled down and forced a 4-3 double play to end the frame.
Justin Jarvis' (6-3) had a rough opening to his 12th start of the season as Mason Auer recorded a three-run home run to put Montgomery in the lead. The righty allowed two hits and two walks in the inning, and the Biscuits carried a 3-1 lead into the second inning.
The third inning was the opposite for Muñoz, who allowed three runs off a wild pitch and a two-run single from Jeferson Quero to put the Shuckers back in the lead 4-3. The two-run knock means that Biloxi now has six RBIs when there are two outs on the board in the series.
Logan Driscoll tied the game with an RBI-single in the bottom-frame, and Diego Infante put the Biscuits back in front with a two-run homer over the right field wall. Afterwards, Robbie Baker entered the game for Jarvis and closed the inning by forcing a 4-6-3 double play.
Auer continued to build on what had been an excellent day so far, this time with a 396 ft. two-run homer over the center field wall. It was Auer's second home run in the ballgame and it brought in his fourth and fifth RBI of the day, tying former Biscuit Alika Williams for most RBIs in a game this season.
Baker's day ended in the fifth following a sacrifice fly from Ronny Simon that extended the lead to 9-4. Kaleb Bowman took the mound for the Shuckers and sent the game into the sixth with a strikeout.
Infante brought in another pair of runs in the bottom of the inning after hitting a single to center field, making the score 11-4 Biscuits. The two RBIs made it four on the day and seven in the series for Infante.
Biloxi was unable to make a rally, as Nelson Alvarez closed the game with two strikeouts in the seventh to give Montgomery an 11-4 victory in the first game. Muñoz earned his fourth win of the season while Jarvis recorded his third loss.
The Biscuits jumped out to a large lead in the opening inning of the second game following an RBI-single from Austin Shenton and a grand slam from Evan Edwards. That makes five grand slams on the season for the butter and blue, which is tied for the third-most in a season and is two shy of the team record set in the 2011 season.
With the score now 5-0, Zach Vennaro entered the game for Russell Smith (0-2), ending the left-hander's first Double-A start of the season after 0.2 innings pitched.
Montgomery added to the lead during the second and third innings with a pair of RBI-singles from Logan Driscoll and Tristan Peters. Mason Montgomery (1-2) dominated from the mound for the Biscuits, recording eight strikeouts while allowing only two hits and two walks in his 13th start of the season.
With the score 7-0 in the top of the fifth, Montgomery and Antonio Jimenez got three outs before rain forced the game into a delay. The game was called off after four-and-a-half innings of play, capping off an impressive sweep for the Biscuits.
The Biscuits and the Shuckers enter the penultimate matchup of the series on Saturday, June 17 with the first matchup scheduled for 6:05 PM. It is Outdoors Night presented by Outdoor Alabama featuring Specialty Jerseys and MAX Fireworks. Anthony Molina (2-4) will make his 13th start on the mound for Montgomery, while Tobias Myers makes his 12th start of the season for Biloxi.
The series will close with a Father's Day Pint Glass Giveaway presented by Common Bond Brewers and Bark in the Park on Sunday, June 18.
