Montgomery Biscuits News Release
PEARL, Mis. - The Biscuits (9-3) won their fifth-consecutive game and shut out the Mississippi Braves (3-9), 3-0, on Thursday night at Trustmark Park.
Tanner Gordon (1-2) made his third start of the season for Mississippi, and the Atlanta Braves number 28 prospect retired the Biscuits in order on fly-outs to all three outfield positions in the top of the first.
21-year-old Anthony Molina toed the rubber on the other side for the Biscuits, and the righty matched his counterpart with a clean first, retiring Cody Milligan and Cal Conley on groundouts to second, and then Landon Stephens on a swinging strikeout.
Blake Hunt grounded a single into right to begin the top of the second, and then a check-swing double to left by Logan Driscoll put runners at second and third with nobody out. Gordon struck out Mason Auer and Heriberto Hernandez, but uncorked a wild pitch to the backstop, which allowed Hunt to score, and then Driscoll-on a throwing error by Mississippi catcher Arden Pabst-to make it 2-0 Biscuits early. Molina then struck out his second batter and allowed a single in a scoreless bottom of the second.
Alika Williams singled and Alexander Ovalles doubled in the top of the third, but Gordon settled down and did not allow a run in the frame despite the two knocks. Molina allowed a single in a scoreless bottom of the third, but retired everyone else, and punched out two more batters to run his total to four through three innings.
Gordon spun a perfect top of the fourth, striking out two more batters to run his total to five. Molina allowed another single, but retired the other three batters he faced in a scoreless bottom of the fourth to maintain the 2-0 edge. Gordon kept the Biscuits off the board in the top of the fifth.
Molina became the first Biscuit pitcher to go longer than four innings (4.1) in 2023, walking the first batter of the bottom of the fifth, before striking out Jacob Pearson. Chris Gau (2-0) then came on for the righty and retired the next two hitters to keep the combined shutout intact. Gordon then worked a perfect top of the sixth.
John Doxakis spun a perfect bottom of the sixth in relief of Gau, striking out two. Miguel Pena relieved Gordon and worked a one-two-three top of the seventh, despite walking the first two hitters he encountered. Doxakis allowed a single to Arden Pabst, but retired everyone else-including two on strikeouts-while preserving the shutout.
The Biscuits increased their lead to 3-0 on an Ovalles RBI-groundout in the bottom of the eighth. Graeme Stinson made his 2023 Biscuits debut with a scoreless bottom of the eighth, allowing a single and striking out one.
After the Biscuits went scoreless in the top of the ninth, Michael Mercado earned his first professional save with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
The Biscuits will go for their sixth-straight win on Friday night when Sean Hunley (0-0) faces Daniel Martinez (0-0) at 6:35 PM.
The Biscuits will return to Montgomery for a 12-game home stand, with the first six-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Tuesday, April 25 at 6:35 PM for Autism Awareness Night Supporting Easter Seals of Central Alabama.
