Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - A 6-run fifth inning put the Birmingham Barons into cruise control as they skate past the BayBears 8-1 in the rubber of their five-game series at Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
It was a scoreless contest until the fifth when the Barons (13-6) heated up against Cody Evans (2-2). C.J. Retherford started the frame with a home run while an error by Mark Hallberg allowed Robbie Hudson to reach, kicking off a firestorm of trouble.
Hudson scored on a double by Gordon Beckham who trotted home after a two-bagger by Tyler Flowers. Brandon Allen singled to push Flowers to third, and they both scored on a two-base knock by Dayan Viciedo. Lee Cruz finished the rally with an RBI single to bring home Viciedo, putting the Barons up by six.
Ricardo Sosa homered for the lone Mobile (13-7) tally in the bottom of the sixth against Lucas Harrell (2-0) who tossed seven solid innings, flanked in the bullpen by John Lujan who worked a pair of innings. Birmingham scored with solo home runs in the seventh and eighth innings from Flowers and John Shelby.
After the contest, the Diamondbacks traded reliever Vince Bongiovanni to Toronto for future considerations. Reliever Reid Mahon will join the BayBears in Jacksonville to replace Bongiovanni on the roster.
Matt Torra (1-1, 4.71) works for the BayBears as they open their five-game series with the Suns on Thursday night at 6:05. The BayBears return home to battle Montgomery on Monday, May 11 at 7:05 p.m. For Hank Aaron Stadium ticket information, please call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
