Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
June 23, 2005 - Over 19,000 fans (the largest series attendance in Aberdeen history) came out to support the IronBirds in their first series of 2005. Unfortunately for the hometown faithful, the 'Birds (0-3) were swept by McNamara Division rival Hudson Valley (3-0). Thursday's game was a 3-2 loss with the winning run scoring in the 8th for Hudson Valley.
IronBirds CF Zach Davis led the offensive charge with 3 hits, including a leadoff triple and a run scored. Ryan Steinbach played well after starting his second consecutive game at short, picking up 2 more hits for Aberdeen. Catcher Cody Wargo came home with the other run in the bottom of the 4th, on an RBI by 1B Mark Fleisher.
Starter Bob McCrory had a solid but unspectacular outing, allowing only 3 hits and a run with 2 walks and 5 K's in 3.2 innings. He turned the ball over to Russ Brocato, who went 2.1 scoreless innings, surrendering only 2 hits and picking up 3 strikeouts.
Up 2-1 in the 7th, the IronBirds seemed poised to pick up win #1 in 2005. Lone runs in the top of the 7th and 8th (both charged to Bryan Dumesnil (0-1)) knocked the 'Birds into the L column for the 3rd straight game.
Aberdeen will embark on a 6-game road trip, playing 3 game sets each at Brooklyn and Williamsport before returning to Ripken Stadium on June 30. Brad Bergesen will take the mound Friday night in Brooklyn, with Bruce Gallaway pitching on Saturday. Catch all of the action live on AM 970 WAMD or on www.ironbirdsbaseball.com.
