Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALEM, VA - The Delmarva Shorebirds were rebuffed in their advances to claim a series win as they fell 10-2 to the Salem Red Sox in a rain shortened contest on Sunday evening at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
The split marks the second time the Shorebirds (57-45) and Red Sox (60-42) have each claimed three games of their six game trysts.
After a scoreless first inning, Salem started a run of five straight run scoring innings in the second. After loading the bases with nobody out, Matthew Lugo legged out an infield single to drive in a run with Antoni Flores following with a sacrifice fly double play to make it 2-0.
Ceddanne Rafaela began the third with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. One out later, Nick Decker singled him home. One wild pitch and another out later, Blaze Jordan brough Decker around with another base hit. Jordan then advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored after Tyler McDonough reached on a throwing error to make it 5-0.
Niko Kavadas drilled a two-run double in the fourth to push the Salem lead to 7-0.
Collin Burns plated the only run of the game for Delmarva with an RBI single in the fifth.
That run was quickly answered by Salem with an RBI double from Alex Erro to restore the seven-run cushion.
Kavadas finished the scoring with a two-run bomb in the sixth, his first homer with Salem, to make it 10-1.
Collin Burns hit an RBI double in the seventh, but mother nature stepped in and halted the game with Delmarva trailing 10-2.
Lightning and a deluge of rain hammered the ballpark in the top of the seventh, pushing the game into a delay and eventually forcing the game to be called.
Wilkelman Gonzalez (1-0) earned the win for Salem with 4.2 frames of one run baseball, allowing three hits and a walk, striking out three.
Houston Roth (8-3) absorbed the loss for Delmarva. Roth allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks, striking out three.
After an off-day on Monday, the Shorebirds begin a six-game series with the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium on Tuesday, August 31. Starters for the series opener have yet to be announced. First pitch on Tuesday is slated for 7:00 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on Fox Sports 960 AM and streaming online on IHeartRadio with Sam Jellinek on the call. MiLB.TV coverage will be provided by the Mudcats.
