Bighorns to be Affiliated With Kings and Magic, 09-10

RENO, Nev. - The Reno Bighorns will maintain the Sacramento Kings and reigning Eastern Conference champion Orlando Magic as their NBA parent clubs for the 2009-10 season, the National Basketball Association and the NBA Development League announced today.

"We've cultivated a very positive working relationship with the Kings, including the assignment of Donte Greene, and are looking forward to developing the same with the Orlando Magic," said Jason Glover, president and director of basketball operations for the Bighorns. "It's exciting to be affiliated with the Kings again, and we're thrilled to welcome the Eastern Conference Champions into the Bighorns family, and look forward to helping to develop their young prospects."

This year the Bighorns will retain their affiliation with the Sacramento Kings for the second-straight season. Last season, the Kings finished 17-65, in fifth place in the Western Conference's Pacific Division. The team selected Memphis guard Tyreke Evans with the fourth overall pick in last week's NBA Draft.

In 2009-10, the Bighorns will be affiliated with the Orlando Magic for the first time. Last season, the Magic finished first in the Eastern Conference's Southeast Division with a 59-23 record and fell to the Los Angeles Lakers 4-1 in the NBA finals. Last week, the Magic acquired eight-time NBA All-Star Vince Carter as part of a five-player deal.

"We are very excited about the affiliation in Reno and look forward to building a strong working relationship with their staff," said Otis Smith, general manager of the Orlando Magic.

In addition to the Kings, last season the Bighorns partnered with the New York Knicks. The Knicks will be the 2009-10 affiliate of a new NBA D-League entry in Springfield, Mass.

Last season the Bighorns finished their inaugural season at 25-25, good for fourth place in the Western Division. Reno's roster included NBA D-League All-Star Antonio Meeking, 2007-08 Big East Sixth Man of the Year Patrick Ewing, Jr., University of North Carolina standout David Noel and Russell Robinson, who helped lead the Kansas Jayhawks to the 2007-08 NCAA championship.

The Reno Bighorns will begin their second season in the NBA Development League in 2009-10. The NBA Development League, founded in 2001, is the NBA's official minor league and featured 16 teams with direct affiliations to NBA teams during the 2008-09 season. This Fall, two new NBA D-League teams will begin play in Portland, Maine and Springfield, Mass.-the birthplace of basketball. Eighty-four former NBA Development League players were on 2008-09 NBA end-of-season rosters, amounting to almost 20 percent of NBA players, and the league continues to develop coaches, referees, and front office staff for the NBA and its teams. In fostering the league's connection to the community, its teams, players and staff promote health and wellness, support local needs and interests, and assist in educational development through NBA D-League Cares programs. The NBA D-League also advances the game of basketball as the research and development arm of the NBA.
